A few weeks back was the first time I had even heard of the Trine series let alone that a fourth installment would kick off a busy October. Once I saw the trailer though I was instantly intrigued.
Trine is an 2.5D Adventure game from Frozenbyte studios. It can be played solo or up to four player multiplayer. I got to spend a little bit of time with it ahead of launch and it is as every bit charming and gorgeous as the trailer suggests it is. You switch between three characters on your quest to save Prince Selius from his own dark nightmares. Trine 4 sees the return of characters Amadeus the Wizard, Pontius the Knight, and Zoya the Thief each with their own skills and play style. As Amadeus you conjur boxes to help you traverse and magically manipulate objects. Pontius uses his sword to slash at enemies and his shield to deflect attacks in addition to using his girth to butt stomp on some not so secure structures. Zoya is the most agile and fires her bow and uses rope to swing or pull certain objects. You will need to switch back and forth between characters and use their unique abilities to traverse the beautiful levels solving environmental puzzles. Now I only played solo but the game is said to have a dynamic puzzle system for when playing with friends making the puzzle designs more challenging when you have help.
Again this is my first time in the world of Trine and I dig it so far. Each character is truly unique and the art direction is stunning. Every level and puzzle has an air of fantasy and enchantment that really sells the whole experience. I played undocked on the Nintendo Switch and even then I was marveling at how pretty the game looked and ran It is fully voice acted and so far everyone seems to be doing a really good job. Since this was pre launch there were a few issues that I ran into such as some game crashes and some nondescript objectives on boss fights, but those issues have already been addressed as well as some more in what is going to be a day one patch. Those two things did not really mare my impressions of the game and really look forward to continuing on in the story.
Trine 4 launches October 8th for $29.99 on PC, Switch, PS4 and Xbox. If you are like me and this is your first time with Trine there is also a collection available for purchase that includes all four titles in the series. If the first three are like this I very much want to go back and play through the series.
