The Couple That Plays Together…

The Couple That Plays Together…

I’m lucky enough to not only be able to enjoy a good video game, but my wife does as well. We played great co-op games together like Gears of War, Resident Evil 5, and Portal 2 to name a few. When we couldn’t find a two player game we would take turns in story driven games like Heavy Rain and Alan Wake. I can remember Fable 3 coming out and leaving for the day only to return at night with my wife in a slightly different position on the couch still playing it. For a short time we had two TVs in the living room so we could play different games but still be around each other. And to this day my favorite thing to do is sit down in a dark room and watch her play Outlast or Until Dawn or some other scary game. It is hilarious, especially when she wakes the kids up with her screams, I promise one day to record it for everyone’s enjoyment. I don’t bring this up to brag. I bring this up because I think it is important. After all the couple that plays together stays together.

I think it goes beyond a shared interest. You can enjoy the same movies and music. You can have the same favorite author and food. All of those things can’t do what playing a video game together can do. As a couple you face so many different high stake challenges every day. From choosing a place to live, managing finances, deciding to have kids to raising your kids, a lapse in judgement or a wrong choice could add so much more stress on you and your family. At the end of the day it is just real nice to sit down with your partner, put in a game, and accomplish something small together. You make a mistake in a game and it is no big deal, just restart from your previous save and go about your merry way. That is why I am so lucky to have a wife that enjoys playing video games. We not only get to spend some quality time together but we are simultaneously becoming a stronger unit, working on problem solving and communication and overall being a better couple.  So if you want to have fun with your partner and work on your relationship at the same time, plop down next to them on the couch, turn the lights down low, and hand her a controller. It could be the best thing you do for your marriage.
